About the company
The University of Oxford is a complex and stimulating organisation, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence in research and teaching. It employs over 10,000 staff and has a student population of over 21,000. The University, including the colleges and Oxford University Press, is the largest employer in Oxford and the second largest in Oxfordshire, injecting £750 million annually into the regional economy.
  • There are also over 1,600 academic staff (professors, readers, lecturers), whose appointments are in the main overseen by a combination of broader divisional and local faculty board/departmental structures. Academics are generally all also employed by one of the 38 constituent colleges of the University as well as by the central University itself.There are over 22,000 students at Oxford, including 11,832 undergraduates and 9,857 postgraduates.
Job description
  • In partnership with the Wellcome Trust and the Kenyan Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), the University of Oxford is recruiting an Executive Director (clinical or non-clinical) to lead and direct this world renowned initiative. The remit of the programme is to conduct basic, epidemiological and clinical research on the major causes of morbidity and mortality in Africa, with results feeding directly into national and international health policy; and to expand capacity to conduct multidisciplinary research that is strong, sustainable and internationally competitive.
  • Based primarily in Kenya, the programme has its main research base in Kilifi, embedded in the Centre for Geographic Medicine-Coast and Kilifi County Government Hospital; and another large research grouping in the capital, Nairobi. Formally established in 1989, the programme has an extensive network of partnerships and collaborations across Africa and the wider global research community.


Desired Skills and Experience
  • You will be tasked with the challenge of providing an empowering and collaborative leadership culture in which innovative science can reach the highest international scientific and ethical standards.
  • You will maintain your own research portfolio. You will at the same time ensure robust governance and operational management and manage national and international relationships. You must have research experience in an international setting and be able to demonstrate successful strategic and operational leadership of academic research groups and infrastructure. You will demonstrate a commitment to developing the careers of younger scientists. You will be expected to live in Kenya.
