Setting and Reporting
The
United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations
system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the
global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the
development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global
environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the
attention of governments and the international community for
action.
The
UNEP Division of Environmental Policy Implementation
(DEPI),internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension,
depending on the needs of the department.
The
Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns
work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff
member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily
responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the
intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under
the direct supervision of the Head of the Freshwater and Marine
Ecosystems Branch (FMEB) of the Division of Environmental Policy
Implementation (DEPI), the intern will:
A.
Support the implementation of the Regional Seas Partnership for Small
Island Developing States (SIDS):
•
Following
up and assisting Regional Seas programmes that contain SIDS member
states to implement the forthcoming Regional Seas partnership for
SIDS, as it relates to the green economy for oceans and SIDS, as well
as other relevant decisions taken by UNEP’s Environment Assembly
and Conference of the Parties;
•
Monitoring
UNEP programmes with SIDS, and to evaluate achievements, including
analysis of problems encountered, recommending solutions and remedial
actions;
B.
Assist the Head of Branch in the delivery of the 40th Anniversary of
the Regional Seas Programme:
•
Assisting
in the preparation of materials and media related activities related
to the 40th Anniversary of the Regional Seas Programmes

Education
Applicants
must at the time of application meet one of the following
requirements:
be
enrolled in:
a.
be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree
or equivalent, or higher);
b.
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree
program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c.
Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must
commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be
computer literate in standard software applications;
Have
a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and
have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have
a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals
of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include
willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing
opinions and views.
Advanced
University degree in relevant fields of international relations and
development, marine affairs, marine biology, geography, business
administration and economics preferred.
