Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP implements legislative mandates of the United Nations Environment Assembly and the United Nations General Assembly, ensuring coherent delivery of its programme of work. Its mandate includes coordinating the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of the governments and the international community for action. This position is located in the Regional Support Office (RSO) at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, which reports to the UNEP Deputy Executive Director. Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Regional Support Office, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Office Director the incumbent will:
1. Governance;
   Coordinate and facilitate UNEP’s engagement in inter-governmental and inter-agency processes.
  Engage with diverse political and economic groupings, support regional offices in engaging with member states and informing global processes on environmental sustainability and sustainable development in general.
  Monitor and flag legislative and policy developments of regional significance in governing bodies. Facilitate strategic preparations by regional offices for sessions of regional ministerial fora.
  Plan with regional offices, in liaison with the New York Office briefings as appropriate.
  Support regional offices in preparing their regions for different international meetings.
  Facilitate UNEP’s engagement in inter-agency mechanisms at global, regional and country as appropriate.
  Liaise with relevant regional, sub-regional or liaison offices at locations hosting major intergovernmental bodies.
  Track and manage major policy decisions of relevance to UNEP work and in the regions, and ensure such policy decisions are communicated to regional offices and divisions.
2. Partnership;
  Promote strong partnership among divisions, regional offices and MEA secretariats in initiating projects, raising funding and implementing initiatives.
  Support inter-regional office initiatives aimed at building capacity in UNEP regional offices, undertake joint initiatives that respond to the needs and priorities of individual regions.
  Support regional offices in strengthening partnerships with member states, UN system organizations, major stakeholders, centres of excellence, collaborating centres and the private sector in the implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives.
  Support partnerships among different regional offices in strengthening inter-regional cooperation.
  Support Regional Offices and Regional Support Offices in establishing knowledge management tools.
  Compile developments in the regions of strategic relevance and prepares analysis.
3.  Corporate;
  Contribute to planning for regional ministerial environment fora and other relevant intergovernmental processes relevant to UNEP work.
  Produce policy relevant briefs and status updates for SMT, UNEP Governing bodies, donor consultations, etc.
  Coordinate reporting on the implementation of General Assembly resolutions of regional significance and on UNEP, Agenda 21, MDGs, QCPR, South-South Cooperation, LDCs, SIDS, and region-specific resolutions such as on NEPAD.
  Supervise preparation of various written outputs.
  Direct substantive support to consultative and other meetings and conferences.
4. Administrative;
  Oversee and manage the daily administrative functioning of operations in Regional Support Offices.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international relations, environmental policy/science, economics, or social sciences or related disciplines. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years (10) of progressively responsible experience in inter-governmental and inter-agency activities related to sustainable development, programme planning  or related area of which five (5) at the international and or regional level. Experience in the functioning of multilateral bodies and UN environmental policy and sustainable development is required. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognized by the United Nations.


Languages


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

Assessment Method


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be
followed by competency-based interview.

Job description
The successful candidate will be expected to work with a multi-functional internal team to provide and adhere to all necessary compliance criteria for all registration, regulatory and other Global Product Stewardship (GPS) needs in the East Africa region.

Qualifications 

Min Degree or equivalent in Life Science (physiology, Biochemistry, pharmacy, etc) or Chemistry, other close disciplines with experience will be considered.

Collaboration - This role requires a high amount of interaction with other departments and strategic suppliers as well as agencies externally. This role provides the candidate with the opportunity to work with various organizations. Must have proven ability to work well with cross-functional team members
