Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by Providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This post is located in UNON/Office of Director-General at the Nairobi duty station. Under the supervision of the Director-General of UNON and overall guidance of the Director and Deputy Director of Africa 1 Division/Department of Political Affairs (DPA), the incumbent will review and monitor activities in the Great Lakes region with particular emphasis on East Africa; Strengthen in this regard, cooperation with sub-regional organizations in East Africa, particularly in the area of peace and security.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform the following: 1. Assess trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues, such as terrorism, piracy and drug-trafficking; recommend solutions/possible action by the United Nations; 2. Analyze political and related events within the assigned area with a view to providing early warning advice to senior officials; 3. Prepare analytical reports and papers on high profile matters with implications on peace and security in the area of coverage; 4. Conduct research and prepare analytical materials on the situation in the region as appropriate. Coordinate and liaise with Regional Economic communities and other UN presences in the region as needed; 5. In close consultation with the Director General of UNON, liaise with stakeholders in countries of the region, including with representatives of Governments, national institutions, civil society organizations, donors and other regional actors with a view to strengthening regional and national peace-building and conflict prevention efforts; 6. Advise on opportunities for preventive diplomacy intervention in the region as appropriate; 7. Provide inputs to notes, background papers, talking points and speeches as required;8 . Brief representatives and provide, as appropriate, suggestions and recommendations; participate in recruitment and selection processes for staff in the DPA Liaison Team; 9. Perform other related duties as may be assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament,security, development management, conflict resolution or related field. Experience on issues and challenges affecting East Africa or Horn of Africa, or the Great Lakes region required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
Assessment MethodEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

A leading mid-sized insurance company with profits in excess of Ksh. 200m dealing in general insurance is looking to recruit a suitably qualified, dynamic and experienced individual to join their high powered team as an Underwriting Manager, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will:
Provide leadership for the organisation’s underwriting service function and effectively manage the security and risk of the company’s portfolio.
Maximise opportunities for profitability by leveraging business relationships, product knowledge and underwriting expertise.
Develop a road map and promote the company by executing strategic initiatives that subsequently contribute to the profitability and growth of the business.
Develop and implement equitable policy contracts and due execution of policies and other accountable documents.
Ensure underwriting disciplines are maintained at all times through relevant audit and controls.
Ensure that the risks accepted in the company are within the set underwriting guidelines and are covered under the reinsurance programme.
Be responsible for the administration of all underwriting plans and ensure compliance with all regulatory agency guidelines and including the company policies.
Prepare and maintain up-to-date underwriting manuals.
Continuously review and optimise business processes and mobilise resources to meet the changing business needs and client expectations.
Drive technical excellence and trading behaviours across the underwriting team and effectively manage internal and external stakeholders.
Cultivate a culture of high performance, ethics and ownership within the department ensuring behaviours meet the expected standards.
Ensure underwriting empowerment is dispersed adequately and appropriately and fully utilised by all underwriting staff.
Through audit and underwriting control analysis spot trends and highlight training programmes, as well as develop competence at an individual level, continuously raising underwriting and trading capability.
Provide guidance, support and supervise the underwriting department staff.
Prepare management report, consistently evaluate underwriting performance against business objectives and recommend productive measures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree in a Business related field.
Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
Fully AIIK/ACII or equivalent qualified.
Minimum of 10 years experience in the Insurance Industry, 3 of which at managerial level.
Proficient in insurance management software packages preferably Premia Systems.
Proficient user of the MS Office application.
Demonstrate a track record for underwriting profitability, breadth and depth of technical knowledge in all underwriting matters and an understanding of the insurance market and processes.
Demonstrate strong leadership as well as good mentoring and coaching skills.
Pragmatic decision maker with strong analytical and numerical reasoning.
Strong team player, communicator with superior negotiation skills.
